Those who insist it was perfectly all right for Noynoy Aquino to try and influence the outcome of the Corona impeachment trial by talking secretly to some senators who sat as judges simply because the process was not entirely judicial but also political are wrong and hypocritical at the same time. Wrong because, if it was entirely judicial, Noynoy had no business meddling in a judicial process, and wrong again because, if it was entirely political, then why take the nation through a long-winded charade and sham of a trial when all that needed to be done was tell the senator-judges the outcome he wanted. Hypocritical because, had the personalities been different, and Noynoy was not Noynoy but Gloria Macapagal Arroyo, there would have been no end to the howls of protest and condemnation. Hypocritical because the offense is measured, not by its offensiveness, but on the basis of who was doing it. I challenge those who are now defending Noynoy if they would have similarly defended Arroyo had she done the same thing, which is to talk to the senator judges -- that and only that, with all other circumstances in the case unchanged. The problem with this country is that there are so many hypocrites. And the bigger problem in this country is that it is these hypocrites are the ones who hold sway. As a result, the measure of all things lies not in their intrinsic weight, good or bad, but in the person responsible for doing them. But of all the hypocrites in this country, none is worse than Noynoy himself. And I can prove that by using his very own words said in reaction to the brouhaha over the recent privilege speech of Senator Bong Revilla. When Revilla exposed the secret meeting he had with Noynoy concerning the impeachment trial of former chief justice Renato Corona, and Noynoy was placed on the spot and could not deny the exposé, the president said he learned other parties were trying to influence the senators and he was just trying to counter the influence. But Noynoy did not stop there. That is because when you are not telling the truth, you always feel that what you have said is never enough, and you feel compelled to buttress it with even more explaining. So Noynoy is now saying it is really impossible to influence or pressure the Senates 24 kingdoms. One cannot get caught in a glaring contradiction without also getting caught in a lie because truth can never get contradicted. If there was no way for Noynoy to pressure or influence the Senates 24 kingdoms, what was he doing meeting them in secret? One of Noynoys two conflicted statements has got to be false. I do pity Noynoy for his admitted hurt on hearing Revilla implicate his sister and her husband in a controversy involving a planned multi-million-dollar government contract. We always hurt for the ones close to us. But I do not share his accompanying anger over the Revilla exposé. Noynoy has no right to be angry over allegations of involvement of his relatives in controversies. For as has been said often -- if you can dish it, you must also be able to take it. And God knows how painfully, cruelly, and oftentimes unfairly and unjustly Noynoy has been dishing it out to others. As former president and now Manila City Mayor Joseph Estrada once famously said of lifes unforgiving situations -- weather weather lang. If it is any consolation to Noynoy, and no matter what the nation thinks of Bong Revilla, at least he was gallant and man enough not to mention Noynoys sister by name. Maybe it is in our culture, I do not know, but men are not supposed to quarrel with women. That is why Senator Juan Ponce Enrile elected to just twiddle his gadget as Senator Miriam Defensor Santiago flailed away at him from just feet away on the Senate floor. That is why Revilla is not Noynoy in at least this respect. Noynoy respects no one in his tirades. He is notorious for quarreling even the very ones who invite him as guest of honor to parties or anniversaries, occasions that normally call for celebration and happiness. The guy is simply impossible. And to think he is our president. philstar/freeman-opinion/2014/01/27/1283431/wrong-and-hypocritical
