Those who would like to quibble about the Keystone pipeline or other similar energy projects, might want to think about a few things; The formula is a simple one. The only way the planet can sustain 7+ billion people is through the energy sources we have at hand (oil and coal). Even now, a good number of this population leads a precarious existence, perhaps up to half that population. Human beings are life forms too (along with trees, frogs, birds, fish, etc.) although there are some who might argue that position....... In the meantime, climate change has been with us for our entire existence and the speculations about such are endless! What is not speculatory however, is what a slight increase of price in energy will do to those (especially women and children) who are living in abject poverty! It will reduce their current existence to something horrendous (sitting over here comfortable and smug, we have never even seen the face of real poverty) and those who are already reduced to that state will face death in searing pain from a variety of sources! There is NOTHING (other than oil and coal) on the horizon or even 10 years out that can even make a dent in the BTU footprint that the world requires (other than perhaps natural gas)...... anything else is simply a pipe dream at this point! So now the equation becomes very simple i.e. weighing a doubt (speculation on climate change) against a certainty (millions of people dying via rising energy prices)!
