Though we have not heard of it much in the past two decades, this year marks the 30th anniversary of Bhopal - the worlds worst chemical plant accident. To this day, more than 200,000 people have fallen ill and up to 30,000 have died from the consequences of the accident. There will never be an exact figure. Many of those who breathed their last breath on that night were not included in any statistics, because the only people who knew their names were also dead. Union Carbide, paid about $500 million and basically washed its hands - as it were - of the consequences. And while its the huge multinational which bears the blame for the original accident, the Indian governments treatment of its own people, the corruption and neglect is nothing short of criminal.
