“Though your sins are as scarlet they will be white as snow…” That famous verse is often applied as a promise to individuals seeking a change, a freedom, from old lifestyles and worn pathways leading nowhere… and includes the very real encouragement that if we come to God with a repentant heart – He will forgive us, completely! And it’s true! But originally it was written to a nation that had fallen away from the God who established them. Listen to the opening list of their descent. “Though I brought you up and nourished you, you have rebelled against Me. You know longer know Me at all. You are corrupted with your sins and your children are corruptors in your image who have also become alienated to Me. You are beyond the point of chastening because with each correction you rebel all the more. Your head is sick and your heart is faint. Your stride is broken, your feet unsure, there is a stench of unhealed wounds. Your country has become unfit for habitation, cities are burning, strangers are devouring your land. Your religious life is vain and your prayers are going unanswered.” That does not sound good at all! But it does sound a lot like America today. And we can set aside all the rhetoric, the diatribes, and all the talking points in between because there is only one thing that can bring us to wholeness now… the same prescription written almost 3,000 years ago, a prescription for action: “You begin by washing yourselves clean. Put away your evil activities. Cease with the self-indulgent demoralizing. Stop now. Learn what it means to do good again. Learn what it means to be honest and just again. Restore the broken people that surround you. Come toward Me and restore your connection and… “though your sins are as scarlet they will be white as snow…” It’s evident here that God is not interested in any more posturing on the part of His people – that He is looking for action. He is looking for people who will judge themselves (this has nothing to do with eternal salvation), who will rid themselves of ungodly actions (He is only asking for the things we can do), and who will begin spreading that health to others to initiate the vitalizing process (One person can make a difference, if the difference we make brings God back onto the scene). We all know that our nation is in trouble – on so many fronts – but it won’t be a political party, or an economic decision or a policy change that will bring us out – it will be God’s people, turning around, reconnecting to the source of our original greatness that will make the difference. One person turning, one family touched, one community of believers tuned in can make a real difference… Let’s make a difference!
