Thought I would rant for a minute....I had heard that there is sort of a high profile wrestling club that charges a club membership for the season WITHOUT any instruction. Its all live!! Instruction is encouraged on the side for an additional charge in a private practice. Does this make any sense to anyone?? In our industry of the wrestling world, many of you parents are going through this for the first time. Finding what makes the best sense for your wrestler to achieve higher goals. Unfortunately not everyone has the right intentions in mind and end up exploiting you as the parent just because their is a crowd in the room. A few things you should look for in a good room. 1st, you should have a coach that cares about the development of the wrestler over the course of their career and not just a season. 2nd, find a coach that will coach not only @ practice but @ tournaments as well. 3rd, good partners matter a ton but without good instruction to keep development going its useless. The other thing I am seeing going on are wrestlers bouncing around to multiple rooms throughout the week/month. I understand geographically how this makes sense but just know the best case scenario for rapid and positive results are consistency. Wrestling (especially @ a young age) is all about repetition. Technique is developed through muscle memory which is a direct result of repetition. By hitting multiple rooms on a regular basis builds NO consistency. What Ive seen happen is that kids have no mat identity and maybe good at multiple things but NOT great at a few things! First comes a foundation then comes a tool belt! Ill be the first to tell you (the parent) to find a room that makes sense for you. I dont take the business of wrestling personal when it comes to the club. I love our wrestling family and know that we have a great thing going on. I believe through my experience in wrestling and @ the club level I have developed a great system that is proven and works. The goal is college! I build backwards in knowing that a 4X h.s. state qualifier/placer/champion is developed from a good j.h. & g.s. program. That same wrestler WILL wrestle in college. Remember......its a marathon and not a sprint!!
