Thought for today on education: Commerce in education Definitions: Commercial: making or intended to make a profit. Social: of or relating to society or its organization. Purpose: To generate monetary funds for growth. Need: Ø There are central, state government and municipal schools, and non government private, aided schools. These are stated to be social in nature perhaps implying that all the funds to survive and continue come from the public exchequer. If delayed or insufficient funds are given, these schools will languish and remain in a pathetic state, both physically and academically. Ø Then there are private unaided schools. They work in a competitive world. Unless they earn sufficiently, they cannot grow, maintain or improve quality. Money is important to them for this purpose and they charge according to the physical infrastructure and standard of academics being provided. Ø Even in rural and semi-urban areas, if parents can afford the fees, they will opt for and prefer private unaided schools over a government school. The general belief is that school education by the government is poor and by the private institutions is far better. Ø Competition breeds efficiency, and brings improvements in academic instruction. Government schools neither compete nor have the need to do so to survive inspite of high pay scales and funds available. Ø Profit is required to improve physical infrastructure and introduce technology. As long as the profit is being used towards betterment of education being provided, it should not be resented. Also, there are existing laws for commerce already available. Ø Governments have a pathological urge to control and this need includes education. There is no logic to it after 67 years since independence. Less governing and more governance? Thought: What is the need today to have only government recognized ‘social organizations organize education in the country?
