Thought of the Day (05/05/2014) Social progress: the reign of an invincible plutocracy that sanctions massive surveillance and occasional disappearances and black site torture? The purchase (and refurbishing) of republics by corporate power? The collapse of global economies due to predatory capitalism, and the further impoverishment of billions barely surviving? The take over and transcendence of human intelligence by computational articlects? The seemingly inevitable meltdown of the biosphere through species annihilating climate change? Religions reduced to literalist superstitions that still sanction medieval thinking as sacred or divine? Systematic philosophers who spend their entire careers working logical cross-word puzzles, and psychotherapists who adjust half-asleep clients to lives of manageable misery . Overly-positivistic fantasies of a New Age hucksterism that promotes solipsistic self-empowerment? Maybe Confucius was correct that it is a curse to live in interesting times! Or maybe like George Carlin, we should just go along for the ride. Any other options?
