Thought of the evening, part II: Another excerpt from American Exodus concerning the delusional belief in American exceptionalism: The upside of believing that the USA is favored by fortune has been America’s confidence in the face of overwhelming challenges like the naval war with Japan after the destruction of the American fleet, or the nation’s remarkable decision to visit earth’s moon. Over the centuries, America’s reassuring conviction that “God is on our side” has proved a valuable tool. Our brand of laissez-faire capitalism relies on a problematic tenet: If you trust in God, America will prosper, and God will not do anything permanently bad to the US of A. But until the belief that “it can’t happen here” is rejected, disaster preparations will continue to be treated with very little seriousness in the United States. As long as America trusts completely in God and believes it has the inside track with Fortune, it will be very hard to convince people that extensive preparations are needed for anything. Tellingly, naturalized Dutch scientist Ivor van Heerden relates an incident that took place during the Hurricane Pam simulation in 2004 when he suggested to FEMA that tent cities like those used to house the victims of war in Kosovo be prepared for an influx of New Orleanian evacuees. The response by FEMA was outright laughter and a curt rebuke: “Americans” a woman snapped in an acid reaction to van Heerden’s mild-but-perceptible lowland Dutch accent “don’t live in tents.” It should be obvious that while such beliefs persist, America will never develop solidarity with the world’s environmental refugees. It should also be said out loud that while this preconception lasts, environmental disasters will continue to be phenomenons that only happen “elsewhere” and to the less fortunate. This is a truly dangerous preconception, and, unfortunately, the coming decades will rob America of the luxury of such prefabricated “conveniencefood” ideas.
