Thought this was interesting. On a birds eye level, sometimes when people do DNA tests, the results are not what they expect. Most often with the Smith project, its that multiple people have a tree they believe in and it conflicts with other people who have the same tree and they cant all be correct because.... DNA. Have had at least one person who didnt want to take the test because he wasnt convinced he would like the results. Another participant thought she was a descendant of one person and found it wasnt so. One man who had researched Smiths for years and was an authority on one branch found he didnt match his line. And, its also a reason, despite everyone wishing that every participant would be completely open about their background, why some people, even when in a project, choose privacy. We try really hard to find, at the least, a *stopping point* of the earliest ancestor someone can prove and hope to get additional testers to prove up the line one way or the other. Heres another story, the vendor is 23andme. vox/2014/9/9/5975653/with-genetic-testing-i-gave-my-parents-the-gift-of-divorce-23andme Now, obviously, the volunteer admins on the Smith DNA project want more people to test because the larger the pool of results, the more chances for people to find a match. I like the idea that people should realize that the unexpected CAN happen.
