The Greeks gave it two names: Apollo, when it appeared as a morning star; and Hermes, when it appeared as an evening star. In Roman mythology, Mercury is the god of time, business, travel, and communication. In astrology, Mercury represents the conscious mind and intellectual powers of a person; it also rules the two signs of intellect, Gemini and Virgo. Retrograde is a term used when a planet gives the impression that its moving backward. The illusionary effects of this phenomenon show up in our daily lives. When Mercury appears to move backward, so do the areas of our lives ruled by it. Here are some of the areas Mercury affects: − Communication and perception − Travel and transportation − Appointments and timeframes − Memory and mental capacity − The Internet, computers, and cell phones − Televisions and electronics − Business transactions and law contracts − Relationships − Postal and courier services Here are some common issues that arise during a Mercury retrograde period: − Mail gets lost − Computers break down − Clients are late − Car accidents occur − Marital disagreements happen − Memories become foggy − Items are misplaced − Airplanes and trains are late − Contracts are not honored Many people associate Mercury retrograde with Murphys Law, which is known to say, If anything can go wrong, it will – at the worst possible time. Countless people experience Murphys Law more than usual during a Mercury retrograde. Several historic natural disasters are also associated with Mercury retrograde periods: − Sinking of the Titanic − Asian tsunami of 2004 − Hurricane Katrina − Cyclone Nargis in Burma − Sichuan earthquake in China − Volcanic eruption in Iceland However, take heart! Awareness and preparation are the keys to thriving during all the unpredictability and uncertainty for which Mercury retrograde is known. Mercury retrograde is a wonderful opportunity to work with Mother Nature and her cycles. During a Mercury retrograde period, I recommend that you do half of what you would usually do. This way, you can really examine whats on your plate – and ask yourself if certain tasks can wait for a few weeks. Mercury retrograde is a good time to take a slow, deep breath and put your life back into perspective. When you take a timeout from your daily grind, you create space for a transformational opportunity. This is also a great time to acknowledge when something in your life is no longer working or useful – so you may release it. Here are the things you can do successfully during a Mercury retrograde: − Revamp − Re-introduce − Renegotiate − Rediscover − Reconnect − Rewind − Review − Revisit − Rejuvenate − Renew − Revise − Research − Reconfigure − Relax There are also potentially positive developments during a Mercury retrograde period! For instance: adopted children may find their birth parents; old friends might show up out of the blue; mail lost for decades could return to circulation; and, attorneys may find evidence and clues that have been overlooked for years (many so-called cold cases have been revisited and solved during a Mercury retrograde period). This demonstrates that Mercury retrogrades arent all bad – and that you dont need to fear them! In fact, this is your opportunity to truly transform situations and create a better life for yourself. Things you can do during a Mercury retrograde: − Back up your computer, tablet, and cell phone − Give yourself wiggle room to make it to appointments on time − Do half of what you normally do Things to NOT do during a Mercury retrograde: − Begin new projects − Get your car repaired − Break up with a spouse or partner − Take on more than you normally would − Believe everything you hear In short, try not to take things too seriously during this time frame, for there are many things out of your control. Going with the flow of life will make this time of uncertainty much easier and gentler on your soul!
