Throughout third grade I looked forward to the next year because in fourth grade students took part in 4-H club. In the fall of my fourth grade year the county 4-H leader came to school to sign up all the students in fourth. When she came to me she filled out my information then stopped and looked up at me when she got to my birthday. There was an age requirement that followed what the school system called for. Since I had skipped to second grade mid-year of first grade it turned out that I was too young! I was so disappointed. Every month during 4-H time I had to leave the classroom. It was painful, needless to say, not to get to participate in the projects that my classmates chose. Finally, in fifth grade I was allowed to join 4-H. When I was eleven Mama let me go to 4-H camp in Columbia. I felt so growth up. Back then the campers stayed in old army barracks which had no air conditioning. That fact didnt discourage me from having the time of my life. The first night in the barracks, however, did scare and creep me out. A fellow camper was skating up and down the wooden floors and she rammed a 6 inch splinter into her foot. Her screams could probably have been heard in downtown Columbia. She was taken to the emergency room for treatment. She did not return to camp that week because when notified her parents came to the hospital to take her home. After that excitement I was extremely careful walking on the wooden floors. The rest of us went on enjoying the games, crafts and movies. Every afternoon I would buy an ice cream sandwich and Dr. Pepper.....pure bliss! My favorite part of camp was swim time in the afternoon. For me, a nonswimmer, it was more like bounce around and splash time. I think my bathing suit was a used one Aunt Becky had gotten for me somewhere. It was black and white (one-piece of course) and had inserts for the bust area to fill it out. I think the inserts are referred to as chicken cutlets in the beauty pageant circuit. The second time I went to the pool I remember bouncing around in the water and laughing and joking with the new friends I had made. Out of the corner of my eye I saw something floating on the surface of the pool near my head. I turned to examine what it was and I discovered one of my chicken cutlets had broken free of my bathing suit and was heading toward the deep end. As quickly as I could I moved over to my Free Willie and grabbed it. I looked around to see who was nearby and who had seen what I had done. I stooped down into the water as low as I could without going under and pushed the insert back into my bathing suit! I was so embarrassed but I should have saved the humiliation until I got out of the pool. Shortly afterward, I climbed out the water and walked toward the barracks. I looked down at myself only to see I had shoved the insert in on top of the other one! I looked like the Hump Front of 4-H camp. Being out in the open I didnt dare make an adjustment so I walked briskly back to the barracks and removed both cutlets!! I chose flat chest over lump-sided!
