Thursday Aristotle once said, For the things we have to learn before we can do them, we learn by doing them. The roots of education are bitter, but the fruit is sweet.” Intelligence has been defined in many different ways including logic, abstract thought, understanding, self-awareness, communication, and learning, having emotional knowledge, retaining, planning, and problem solving. Intelligence requires being taught by who, what, when, where, why, and how. Wisdom also requires being taught when to use our knowledge. Being intelligent requires an education. Education is the most powerful weapon which you can use to change the world. That being said, one should never confuse getting a degree with getting an education. There are things that have been most valuable to some that were not learned in school but through experience. Even doctors need to continually educate themselves to remain in good standing in the medical community. There are two areas where people acquire education or knowledge. They call it book knowledge vs. street knowledge. Generally street knowledge means experience and lessons learned outside of a classroom while book knowledge is education based on teaching and reading; generally in a structured setting. BUT, did you know you should have a healthy blend of both and that you need both together to really live a fulfilling life? This combination is the key to intelligence. Setting and attaining goals can help you enrich your life. Making big changes all at once is extremely stressful and sets most people up for failure. You have your whole life ahead of you to become the person you want to be and dont feel like you have to do everything today. Learning is a must. It can be fun and easy, or at least relatively so. Or it can be frustrating, intimidating, and no fun at all. It all depends on what you are trying to learn. Some will say a person only learns in two ways, one by reading, and the other by association with smarter people. Try to keep track of the things which work well for you and those which do not. Eventually, what would work better is to help them understand how you learn, and try to find common ground. Develop a passion for learning. If you do, you will never cease to grow. How much more so do we need to continually educate ourselves to survive in this ever changing world? We must and so the goal for today is for me to remind you to keep on learning and applying what you learn so you get the full benefit and not confuse education with intelligence. If someone tries to teach you something, try to figure out what they are doing, and see if it works well for you. If it isn’t working, try to direct them to an approach which works for you. Or you could just ask them to *repeat*it. Through repetition, these connections are strengthened and learning occurs. Life as a whole, from the moment we are born to the moment we depart, is a process of learning. Every day may not be good, but there’s something good in every day. Learning is endless. So enjoy the ride!
