Time for this mama to vent: so here it goes. Alot of special needs moms get called things like lazy and worthless to society because they do not have a job. This is one of the most untrue statements of a special needs mommy. People who do not have special needs children do not understand the time put into caring for a special needs child no matter how small or big the need is. So here Im going to list reasons why its hard for a special needs mom to work and Im sure all of my special needs mommy friends will appreciate this: * Finding a job willing to work around all of your childs appointments. You see Jack sees 10 different drs and specialists. He has several appoitments each week and sometimes 2-3 appoitnments in 1 day. Jacks big brother Connor is ASD (autistic) and has sensory processing disorder. Both Jack and Connor do therapies so we have 4 days a week that we do therapies. Theres no job that will allow a mom to come in when they can and leave anytime they want. It doesnt work that way. * Finding a daycare that is willing to deal with distributing all their medications. Lots of special needs children are on several medications daily that they need to survive including Jack. Tons of them like Jack also have to have several nebulizer breathing treatments a day. Its important to know and keep up with your childs medications and make sure no dose has been skipped or forgotten. * children with immune system diseases or a compromised immune system. Daycares love to share germs. Lots of special needs children cant be exposed to germs like that and if they do the smallest thing can make them deathly sick. Jack has a type of primary immunodefiency disease it causes jack to not be able to fight off colds and other germs like other kids. The smallest cold turns into something serious like rsv, pneumonia, and respiratory infections that cause hospital stays and has him struggling to breathe. He is not allowed around places like daycares (per drs orders) because of this. * alot of daycares do not accept children with special needs. You have to find someone who is trained to deal with a special needs child and their emergencies or problems that may arise. * Feeding: Alot of children with special needs have feeding tubes. Daycares and most anybody do not know how to care for feeding tubes and how to feed through them. Then theres children with food allergies and intolerances where they have to read every label to make sure your child isnt getting something that they cant have. Jack has malabsorption syndrome and several food intolerances. Theres also strict feeding schedules, Jack is on a very strict round the clock feeding schedule and most people and daycares dont have the time to read every label and feed a child around the clock. * Moms of special needs children OFTEN have unexpected trips to the drs office, Er visit, or even hospital admissions. You will miss alot of work with these unexpected things that arise and more than likely will be fired anyway. * Allergies: some daycare workers may smoke, have animals, wear perfume, or even touch a food and any of this could set off a childs asthma or allergies. Jack has both severe allergies and asthma. Now I know this is long ad I cant thank you enough to take the time to stop and read this. I encourage you to modify this and share so everyone can read. So the next time you go and try to judge someone who doesnt work or another special needs mommy thats asking for help, think about this. God Bless you all
