To Be Half The Man We were watchers – mostly when it came to the house my brothers and I Watched my father wire new outlets Watched him measure – saw – replace whatever age wore – bent crooked – or warped out of line Watched tubes go in and out of radios and TV’s with under-breath hoping before final joy Watched the plum lines snapped for tile laying floors Watched the lead – Mom’s stove top melted to be poured into coffee can mold weights Watched the radiators drained to gain new valves Watched the under sink pipes get replaced Watched the chessmen soldered into nut and bolt armies of good design and better battlefield strategies Watched as the same kneel – stand – sit – kneel – stand – kneel rigidity he followed at every Sunday Mass coursed through his tutorial veins until his boys gave way to men Watched as he hung on floating between reality and that place where mixed-up mugged beaten heads dwell until he was sure his job was done
