WE MUST FIGHT FOR OUR TEACHERS; WE ARE WHO WE ARE BECOZ OF THEM ============================================ Uganda has 160,000 primary teachers who are among the worst-paid public workers in the East Africa. Secondary school teachers take home 450,000 shillings a month whilst their primary school counterparts earn an average of just 270,000 shillings. If you pay peanuts you get monkeys! Teachers in Uganda are living in abject poverty. This must be stopped. Something must be done to reverse this appalling trend. Last year, the Kenyan government increased the pay for their teachers. The lowest paid teachers got up to KSh37,000 on top of their monthly salary, and the highest got as much as KSh100,000. Kenyan Teachers secured additional rates for commuter allowance, special school allowance, responsibility allowance and readers allowance. The commuter allowance for the lowest paid teacher in Job Group G is Sh4,000 Kenyan Shillings. In short, Kenyan primary teachers take home between the $500-600 per month. Interestingly, Last year, the government increased salaries of the Uganda Peoples Defence Forces (UPDF) by 4%. Under the new salary structure that was announced by the Ministry of Defence, the least paid soldier now earn 310,000 shillings a month, up from 290,000 shillings a month, while the top most paid officer get 1,600,000 shillings a month , an increment from 1,540,000 shillings a month. The talk of economic development in Uganda is therefore skewed and misplaced. There will never be economic development unless the entire business community is able to get the right people with the right skills from within the country to recruit. Those right skills are gained from the university & college education on one hand and from hands on training (apprenticeships) by the companies themselves on the other hand. You can not talk of university / college education unless you have had a good primary or/and secondary education. To have a good primary education, you need excellent leaders (headteachers) that are well supported by well trained, well remunerated, highly motivated and dedicated teachers in every school up and down the country. We all cant afford to take our children to Sudhirs Kampala Parents School or its equivalent in every urban center in Uganda. I promise to pay all Ugandan teachers (both in primary and Secondary) the equivalent of what Kenya shall be paying their best teachers (Repeat: what Kenya shall be paying their best teachers). However, my government shall increase the intensity of school inspection and monitoring. The best shall be retained, those middle of the road shall be developed and those in the bottom quarter shall be asked to leave the profession. The National Party shall be truly national in character. Join the National Party. By Sunday Geoffrey President The National Party
