To The Who: I was 15 years old in the summer of 1989. Rock n roll - TopicsExpress

To The Who: I was 15 years old in the summer of 1989. Rock n roll was a huge part of my life and I was raised by my parents on a steady diet of The Beatles, The Stones and the 70s California sound. But early in my teens I discovered The Who on my own and dove in head first. I spent most of 89 shuffling between my cassettes of Whos Next, Live At Leeds, Tommy and The Who By Numbers. I also bootlegged the Radio City Music Hall performance of Tommy off an FM radio broadcast. On July 3 of that summer (25 years ago today), after saving all my newspaper delivery money, I saw The Who live at Giants Stadium in New Jersey and the experience changed my life. I stood on my chair singing along the entire show, mimicking Dalterys every move. It was the closest I had come to complete euphoria at that point of my life and Ill never forget the feeling of complete joy I experienced. I had just started teaching myself guitar at the time and after seeing the concert began learning every song I could handle by The Who, starting with Cant Explain and Substitute. Im still playing to this day, The Who is a major reason why and I couldnt be more grateful. I guess what I really wanted to say here is my deepest, heartfelt thank you for sending the 15-year-old me on an Amazing Journey that continues to this very day. Long live rock!
