To a young fan even somewhat familiar with Star Trek storytelling, these filmstrips likely were a disappointment given the lack of knowledge shown in regard to the U.S.S. Enterprise. Between the depiction of the ship’s soft landing on a planet and taking off again – abilities the spacecraft demonstratively lacked in the television series – and an obvious ignorance of the ship’s very capable tractor beam, which would have offered a quick and easy solution to obstacles in each of the stories, the short tales possessed credibility problems that would have been hard to ignore. That noted, the filmstrips might have been enough to pique a youngster’s interest toward watching the animated series, and would have provided an adequate transition to that production of Star Trek for sure. --Kevin Dilmore, looking back at filmstrips, Happy Meal boxes and coloring books (cue George Takei: Oh, my!) aimed at the kiddie crowd, in his essay in New Life and New Civilizations: Exploring Star Trek Comics (I have a fondness for these old stories, horrible though they may be. I even have the actual Happy Meal Boxes--unused, so they dont smell like hamburgers.)
