To all of my friends: I challenge the question Why do you not have - TopicsExpress

To all of my friends: I challenge the question Why do you not have a garden? Here is some of what I am growing this year: beets, onion, watermelon, summer squashes and acorn squash, pumpkin, cucumber, tomatoes, basil, strawberries, peppers and mesculn greens . You can see I have some big spaces and some small spaces, some are even in pots which demonstrates that you dont have much excuse for not growing at least something if you have some space and a little free time. This practice is intrinsically rewarding as well as delicious. No produce tastes as good as when it comes from your own yard from work of your hands. I fear that the art of gardening is being lost in our society, we rely on large industrial farms and supermarkets to meet our demands instead of responsibly trying to meet our needs. The global infrastructure that supports our habit can be horrifying to think of and put into perspective but next time you are at the grocery store take notice of countries of origin for all of your out of season produce. By growing your own produce your menu will continually change with whats in season. Revive the art of canning, pickling and preserving and visit your local farmers market for what you cant produce. If you stopped shopping for produce at your regular grocery store they wouldnt even notice but by going to the local farmers market you are not only supporting your local economy you are allowing someone with a passion to continue to produce fruits and vegetables sustainably. How many of you have memories of your grandparents gardens? I bet most have fond memories of this as a child. Now how many of you planted anything yourselves? My parting food for thought is: responsible and sustainable agriculture starts at home in your back yard or patio, not in a mono - culture field that you cant see the other end of.
