To be honest, we had little idea what we were in for when we crossed from Finland into northern Estonia. Since it was part of the USSR I had imagined streets with cyrillic signs and plenty of Russian but there was a noticeable absence of any such signs and sounds. Rather, Estonian - a uralic language related to Finnish - filled the air more often than not. As did the rain. Drying gloves on towel warmers was part of the nightly routine but occasional meetings with fellow travellers made the days feel less soggy. Marcel and his excellent Ural ran into us a few times along the way and his excitement at travelling under 80 kph was somehow infectious.
