To celebrate our latest collaboration with the Royal Academy of Arts of Arts, we talk to Edith Delaney, Curator of Contemporary Projects and Head of Summer Exhibition at the RA, about her passion for beauty and contemporary art... THE SUMMER EXHIBITION HAS BEEN RUNNING FOR 246 YEARS AND IS THE WORLD’S LARGEST OPEN-SUBMISSION EXHIBITION. IS CURATING IT A DAUNTING TASK? This year we had 12,000 digital submissions and a shortlist of 4,000 works including paintings, prints, photography, sculpture, architectural models and film to be looked at physically to get the final 1,000 works. It’s a huge responsibility but we’ve come a long way in the last 13 years since I took over. Previously it wasn’t curated at all. WHAT ROOMS ARE YOU MOST EXCITED ABOUT? We’ve had an influx of new academicians over the past year, including designer Thomas Heatherwick and sculptor Conrad Shawcross. They’re showing in Central Hall and Gallery 9, which has been curated by artist Cornelia Parker. WHAT’S THE LASTING APPEAL? It’s an honest snapshot of the contemporary art scene. Anyone can enter and that’s exciting. WHAT’S YOUR BEAUTY ROUTINE? I take skincare and makeup very seriously and love trying new things. I research online and often go into SPACE.NK.apothecary to get that knowledge across brands. I cleanse religiously with a wash-off, oil-based product like EVE LOM Cleanser and I never leave the house without my Laura Mercier Cosmetics tinted moisturiser and concealer. HOW DO YOU TRANSFORM YOURSELF FROM OFFICE TO EVENING? A dark lipstick is essential. I’ll also add NARS Cosmetics blusher and eyeliner by Kevyn Aucoin. HOW DO YOU RELAX? I cycle to and from work, which helps me to switch off from the day. My retreat is our place in the country where I spend weekends with my family.
