To challenge my English course (I passed as it turns out) I had to write a very short persuasive essay which animal makes the better pet - cats or dogs. As much as I love cats, I found they had the most skeletons in the closet to use against them. :) Cats or dogs? I can almost believe this question has been around since the dawn of civilization. I imagine a hunter with a wolf-like dog by his side gazing over at his cat-loving neighbor and grunting disapprovingly. And I have to say, I agree. Cats, sure they’re cute, rolly polly balls of fluff as kittens, but in only a few short months they grow into maniacal creatures of mass destruction. They can, and will, scratch every bit of furniture in the house. Even if you think you have them ‘trained’ to use a cat tree, they just wait until you’re sleeping and happily scratch the couch, the recliner and the antique chair in the corner. Not even adopting one of the declawed variety is a guarantee. Nothing can stop the destruction. Cat people will claim that felines are cleanly. It is a blatant lie. Hairballs are not clean. In fact, the glob is usually hacked up somewhere hidden and by the time you find it the carpet is irreparably stained. Or after you’ve cleaned out the litter box, they don’t quite like its new position and suddenly the rancid smell of cat urine is emanating from your favorite pair of shoes. Quiet dinners alone; think again. Cats are inveterate hunters. Their keen sense of smell and hearing allows them to know exactly when and what you’re eating. Fail to share and your feline ‘friend’ will take what it feels is owed for not lying on your face and smothering while you sleep. Cats are clever beasties. Years can go by without incident. They lull you into a false sense of security, then-- BAM! The dismembered head of a mouse lies on the pillow next to your head. Those ancient hunters were right. To love a cat is to see into the dark abyss of the future.
