To end the week on ASUU Strike, ASUU Strike latest: VP Sambo takes over government’s negotiation. The Vice President Namadi Sambo has taken over the negotiation process between ASUU and FG. The govt’s negotiation team was formerly headed by the SGF, Pius Anyim. For the first time since the commencement of the over 10-week-old strike action by the union, the Vice President met with the leadership of ASUU on Thursday. The meeting was held behind closed doors. Speaking after the closed door meeting, the ASUU President, Nasir Fagge, said, “We have had a meeting with the Vice President and he has given us a message to our members, and we said that as the messengers that we are, we are going to deliver the message faithfully to our members and then they will take the decision.” “I know Nigerians are expecting a solution to the strike, we also want a solution, but I have been given a message to our members. The message is not for Nigerians, it is for our members.” “If I deliver the message, our principal will decide and we will get back to the ministry of education within this week,” he added, saying the union would get back to the education minister on its stance on the govt’s latest offer.' The Minister of State for Education, Nyesom Wike, who was also at the meeting, explained that the meeting had been convened to find a lasting solution to the crisis. Other members of the govt’s delegation included the Executive Secretary of NUC, Julius Okojie; the Vice Chancellors of Bayero University Kano, University of Ibadan, and Abubakar Tafawa Balewa University Bauchi. In another report, ASUU STRIKE: Presidency sacks Suswam Committee; takes over negotiation. The Presidency yesterday through Vice President, Namadi Sambo, took over negotiation with the striking ASUU. Meanwhile, the Committee of Pro-Chancellorsof federal universities, yesterday appealed to ASUU to call-off its strike and return to classrooms, in the interest of the country. Lamenting the consequences that have attended the strike, the pro-chancellors noted that the FG has shown “demonstrable” commitment towards the implementation of the 2009 agreement. 'The govt has even started disbursing the N130billion it promised, direct to the universities.' They further noted that all teaching and non-teaching staff of universities have been on Consolidated Salary Structure since 2009. “Amendment to the pensionable retirement age of academics has been effected through the legislative process. Professors and Readers now retire at 70 years, while others now retire at 65 instead of 60 years.” In a third report, ASUU STRIKE UPDATE: Glimmer Of Hope - ASUU Strike May Be Called Of Next Week. Hope of an early resolution of the ASUU strike rises as the Vice-President Namadi Sambo met with the leadership of ASUU in Abuja on Thursday. An anonymous source at the meeting has said that going by the new offers made by the FG, the strike might be called off within the next two weeks. This, the source said, was because the FG had agreed to inject fund to revitalize the university system. “The meeting went well, the vice-president made some new offers that were different from what was on ground before. For instance, the FG had agreed to start the injection of revitalisation fund into the university system starting with N100bn this year and N150bn in 2014 and this will continue until the university system is solid enough to stand. The source, however, said that the ASUU team promised the vice-president that the union would make it decision on the strike known after its NEC meeting unconfirmed source said had been scheduled for Saturday. And in a final report, ASUU Strike: Mass protest rocks Abeokuta. The planned protests by the Joint Action Fronts, JAF, in solidarity with unions in the educational sector shut down commercial activities as well as vehicular movements in some parts of Abeokuta, the Ogun State capital yesterday. The JAF protest, which consists of members of ASUU and some human right activists, lecturers and students under the umbrella of NANS, also led to hot altercations between the police and the protesters. JAF had organised the protest as a way of sensitising the general public on the danger of the lingering strike by ASUU and the breakdown of negotiation between the two parties involved in the crisis. The protest, which took off from the NNPC junction at Abiola Way, spread to Kuto, Isabo, Kemta, Ibara and other parts of the city, leading to serious traffic in the affected areas. There was heavy presence of policemen and other security agencies across major areas where the protest took place. The strike is still on. Have a nice weekend.
