To highlight one thing I’ve learn from the video below and feel free to correct me if I am wrong. The primary reason for the independence movement is basically because there is too much “bureaucracy” involved in the distribution of money. In other words, our national government is the deciding factor on how much money each state gets. Even if a donation is specific to Chuuk from Australia, Japan or China, it is still funnel through the national government, cut up, and distributed among the states. Even if Chuuk collects $7 million of tax revenues, our national government takes a percentage of that too. Even if Chuuk needs more money for education, healthcare, and others, our national government appropriates the budget for us regardless of the needs. Feel free to correct me if I am wrong. There were many other factors (such as the Palauans were actually the majority framers of the constitution etc.) but the distribution issue seems to be the primary one. In response, while I do like the idea of independence, the above reasons does not merit justification to secede. In the world of business, there are three things that need constant development: People, product, and process (the way we do things). According to the commission, there is a big process problem in the distribution of money. I may be mistaken but that’s seems to be the message they are conveying. Their remedy is to secede. My concern is that the process problem and the secede solution do not match. There is no guarantee that the same process problem will not reappear in the new Chuuk government system. Let me rephrase it another way for the sake of clarity and understanding. The way our national government is distributing and handling the finances, is not satisfactory in “Chuuk’s eyes.” But instead of fixing that solution through our representatives in congress, they say, let’s move out. One very big question is begging to be asked, “Have they exhausted every other possible means to solve that problem that they now agree among themselves for independence?”
