To know that someone is approaching the end of their life stirs up many thoughts and emotions. Im not afraid of death, but the more I see it, the stronger my feelings about it become. Recently, I saw death steadily creeping toward a sweet old soul. I knew the time was near, but I didnt know Id be present when it came. I was standing by his bedside, washing away the tell-tale scent, when he drew his final breath. It was painful and sad, but only for selfish reasons: I wont get to see that sweet smile again, or button that flannel shirt, or hold that frail and wrinkled hand. Mixed in with the sadness was an incredible joy that can only be understood by those who know Jesus. I didnt know whether or not this man was saved until those final moments when I felt the presence of the Lord in the room. A quiet prayer flowed from my lips as I whispered His name, my heart overwhelmed by His mercy and love. Some may fear having to experience a moment such as this, but I consider it a privilege and a blessing to have taken part in this mans transition from earth to his heavenly home. No longer frail and arthritic, hes busy dancing and praising the Lord. The only thing that scares me is the thought of any person passing before they give their heart and life to Jesus. That would be an experience devoid of all joy. The thought of anyone suffering for eternity in Hell terrifies me and grieves my soul, especially since its an avoidable tragedy. Jesus suffered greatly to pay for the sins of every person though He, Himself, was sinless. No matter what youve done, you can be forgiven, saved, and look foward to a Heavenly home if youll choose to call upon the Lord. If Hes calling your name, dont harden your heart against Him. Not everyone sees the end coming. You never know which breath might be your last. When your time comes, I want to know that Im sad only for selfish reasons rather than overwhelmed by terrible grief. My friends, the time for salvation is now. Jesus is the only way. To Him be the praise and the glory!
