To me, Mr. Orr was a superhuman. Every time I spent time at the Orrs house or at their famous USC tailgates, there he was running around cooking and orchestrating a fantastic feast all while greeting and entertaining guests with a smile on his face. He seemed to do it almost magically and always gracefully. I remember one of the first times I had dinner at the Orrs and Mr. Orr looked at the numerous college students filing into his house and he was just overjoyed. He said that nothing made him happier than having hungry college students over at his house so he could cook up a storm and wouldnt have to worry about the food not getting eaten! It was this positive, glowing, constant energy that made him so special to so many people. A couple of times I went over to the Orrs for dinner I would almost feel guilty as sometimes it would be last minute and unannounced as I hitched a ride with Will and Alex for a night away from school. But that was the thing about Mr. Orr. You didnt need an invitation to be welcome in his home. He made me feel like part of the family and when I walked in hed welcome me as if hed been expecting my arrival all day. As he would prepare dinner we would chat and he would ask about school toasting to my successes as if I were his own daughter. Mr. Orr was the ultimate proud father not only to Matt and Will but to everyone who walked through his door. Matt and Will are two young men that over the years have become my brothers. While this loss is devastating for them both, we can all take comfort in the fact that their fathers life and legacy lives on in them. I see him in Matts sense of adventure, his strength of character, and his head of curly hair. In fact, if it werent for the wardrobe mistakes of the 80s I could swear that some of Mr. Orrs old pictures were in fact pictures of his oldest son. On the other hand, Will carries on his fathers legacy by following in his footsteps. I know one day he will make his father proud as a kind and successful lawyer. They not only share a love of law and history but also the gift of speaking and making meaningful human connections. And lucky for the rest of us, both boys seemed to have inherited their fathers wonderful cooking and entertaining abilities. I have faith that the legacy of Steve Orr will continue on for many years to come.
