To minimize incidents of burglaries during the Holy Week break, the Philippine National Police (PNP) is advising vacationers to double-lock their houses and to prevent posting their whereabouts online. In a phone interview on Tuesday, Senior Superintendent Reuben Theodore Sindac, PNP spokesman, suggested that vacationers turn off their phones location settings, so that criminals lurking in cyberspace will not have clues on which houses will be left empty during the holidays. Na-observe namin na pinakamarami ang theft or robbery, o yung tinatawag na crimes against property, kapag ganitong Holy Week. Nandoon ang opportunity, kaya mas prevalent itong mga ganito, Sindac said. He added that vacationers should delay their Facebook activities such as posting vacation photos and status updates that may give burglars hints on a persons whereabouts. The PNP official also advised those who will leave their homes during the Holy Week break to properly secure all doors and windows, or to ask a trusted person to check the empty house from time to time. If we can afford it, better din if we install burglar alarms or even CCTV [closed-circuit television] cameras, kasi deterrent talaga ito sa ganitong incidents, Sindac said. Last week, the PNP already advised the public against posting travel plans on Facebook and other social networking sites as a safety measure for the upcoming Holy Week break. Filipinos have started flocking to the provinces to spend the Holy Week with their families. Even after the Holy Week break, many are expected to visit beaches and other tourist destinations as part of their vacation. Increased visibility Sindac further said that the PNP will ensure increased visibility during the Holy Week break. Hindi mawawala ang presence ng ating mga pulis sa ibat ibang areas. Some are assigned to patrol through police mobiles, while some are doing foot patrols, the PNP spokesman said. He added that the PNP has also coordinated with force multipliers, such as barangay tanods and security guards, to help police officers in patrolling during the Holy Week break. Interior Secretary Mar Roxas has meanwhile ordered local government heads to formulate proper courses of action in order to anticipate the expected heavy movement of people from different places, putting their safety as a top priority. —KG, GMA News
