To my fb friends from Central province.... For recognition of being an inspirational role model for young women, for consistent advocacy for advancing the status of women of Papua New Guinea, Dame Josepine Abaijah was awarded the US Secretary of States International Women of Courage Award yesterday at the national womens conference. Dame Josephine acknowledged and attributed the award to the people of Central Province for taking a bold step to be different. Dame Josephine said she was deeply honoured and humbled for this rare privilege to be recognised for the award. Frail but stil maintaing her personal touch & sense of humour she said: my heart is greatly troubled for I feel that awards & recognitions are for those who tow the line & I did not tow the line. My entry into politics was by the wishes of the people. The status of women at that time was to stay at home & have 20 children, as I was told. Almost all the people of Central province went out & voted on that first election day & so my heart goes back to the people of Central province. I am from milne bay but it was the Central people who really broke the vicious cycle of male dominance in parliament. I pay great respect to the people of Central province for making me who I am today. Dame Josephine was the first & only woman to be elected in the House of Assembly & was party leader of Papua Besena. Salute to the Great Legend of Central Province.
