To send a Christmas card, or not send a Christmas card? that is the question. Tis the season to be jolly and so we go around spreading good cheer. A good thing. Should be done every dam day. Meilleurs Voeux! Joyeux Noel Happy Xmas everyone The Christ bit has got a bit lost in translation over the years; but hey! it is a traditional message: one we expect to receive & feel obliged to say. Bet you even Richard The God Delusion Dawkins imaparts it. A Seasonal marking. Next comes Happy New Year Let us talk about the Christmas card. A few have started trickling in to this household. Every year there are less of them. The media has sounded their death knell. The hey day of buying a card, licking a stamp, slotting it into a postbox is over. I guess we blame the internet. Does is bother you? How many do you send? Any? Ninety year old Ivy from my Open Age play reading group is sending none. It is tempting to follow suit. The first Xmas card was printed by the artist John Calcott Horsley in 1843. Printed for the wealthy Sir Henry, the friend who had given him the idea. Henry wanted a card he could send he could send to friends, family & acquaintances. The first postal service started only three years before. At first it was a service only for rich bastards. Gradually over the years it got cheaper & cheaper. Of late it has got frigging expensive again. Right Royal rip off? Until 1843 no one sent one. In 2014 Pereno stopped sending them. Dean & Pereno are duty bound to send a few. Wont this essay do? PS I have downloaded an image of the first ever Xmas card but now can not find it on the computer; The truth is I am being lidle. How about this: You do not send me one this year & I follow suit. Yes? PPS I bet a press the LIKE button before you do: not that I get many of those either. BUON NATALE!
