To truly see, one must see in layers. There is always more than surface reality. Family dynamics, societal conditions, living styles – these are all part of the reality. To truly see in the gospel sense, one must also have a vision. What appears before one now must also appear in light of God’s promise. There is nowhere that God will not go: into suffering, into death, into the lives and the faces of the poor. Moses was an extraordinary man because he saw God face to face. Believers who truly see the poor, who look into their faces and their hearts, chance also becoming extraordinary. However, it is not easy. “It is like the rabbinical story of a student asking, ‘In olden days there were men who saw God face to face. Why don’t they anymore?’ and the rabbi answering, ‘Because nowadays no one can stoop so low.’” There is something about the gospel that calls us to awareness and to involvement in our world. There is something in God’s revelation that insists we hear and see and care for the poor. There is something that invites us to “stoop so low” and see the face of God.
