Today, 13 soldiers were cleared in the trial of the mass rape of 135 women and girls in the Congo. Only 2 soldiers were convicted, out of the 39 on trial. Activists and survivors have expressed their disappointment in the judgement. Survivors took enormous risks to testify and faced serious consequences if their identity was exposed. Both government and rebel troops have used rape as a weapon. Survivors also noted that many of their perpetrators were not among the 39 being tried and that most of the soldiers were low-ranking.
