Today, 18th September, marks just two years to go until Rugby World Cup 2015 kicks off in England, and as one of the cities set to host the tournament we can’t wait to welcome Rugby and the world to Gloucester. To mark the occasion, Gloucester, along with the other host cities will receive single rugby posts to go up in open spaces as visible symbols of the RFU’s commitment to broadening the appeal of rugby and reaching out to new audiences. The first of the specially designed posts to be installed in the city will be placed in Gloucester Park on the 18th September to help raise awareness of the tournament and help them feel a real connection to the sport in the build up to RWC2015. Council Leader, Paul James, commented: “Posts in the Park is a national campaign aimed at raising awareness of Rugby World Cup 2015 and providing an opportunity for people to practice their rugby skills. “ It’s not about the ‘rough and tumble’ of playing it is about just getting out there and having a go at kicking a ball or just throwing one around. There will be ten sets of posts around the City, so plenty of opportunity for people to get involved. “And for aspiring players they can kick for goal and perhaps imagine that they are recreating scoring the winning points in the last minutes of the final game. Sport is about having dreams and there can’t be a better one than that.” Ian Ritchie, Chief Executive RFU said: “When we launched our legacy vision last year, we talked about inspiring people and bringing rugby to more people across the country. Today marks an important step on that journey to get people thinking about the game and to make the most of the opportunities that hosting the Rugby World Cup brings. “Over the past year we have put in place realistic plans and additional investment to ensure that we build a lasting legacy for the game. We want more people playing, coaching, refereeing and volunteering, watching and talking about rugby - and we are on our way to delivering that vision.” Lawrence Dallaglio, who was a key member of England’s 2003 World Cup winning side and is an ambassador for England 2015 added: “Two years out from the tournament and we are already seeing the impact of Rugby World Cup 2015 being hosted in England. ‘Posts in the Parks’ is a great concept – to see 100 rugby posts going up in parks all across the country is a real opportunity to raise interest and awareness of the game. For the RFU to have a legacy programme in place now means that more people can have access to rugby – not only in the lead-up and during the tournament, but long afterwards.” There are many different ways to get involved in RWC 2015; buying a ticket for a match, volunteering, visiting a Fan Zone or watching on TV. However fans choose to get in on the action, they will be guaranteed an awesome experience. Rugby World Cup is the third biggest sports event in the world with a TV audience in excess of four billion, and we are proud to be a part of this spectacular six-week celebration of rugby.
