Today FEMA issued a statement that the implementation of Plymouth County Flood Insurance Rate Map will be delayed to at least 2015 for all of Plymouth County. This delay will allow time for FEMA to address the appeals and comments by both towns and individuals of Plymouth County. During this delay, I will continue to work with my colleagues in the Massachusetts Delegation to apply pressure to FEMA to ensure that they will use the best available science in implementing Flood Insurance Rate Maps here in Massachusetts. A special thanks to Dr. Brian Howes of UMass Dartmouth and John Ramsey of Applied Coastal Research and Engineering, who uncovered that FEMA’s maps were employing the wrong methodology after I asked them to look into this issue. Incorrect maps for our state will lead to homeowners and small business owners to have to pay exorbitant flood insurance premiums. The cost of faulty maps are high and FEMA must understand that our community, our housing market, and our country’s economy can’t afford for them to be wrong.
