Today I attended the Uganda Police Force Centenary celebrations at Kololo Airstrip. The Police force has grown in number from 3000 in 1986 to 45,000 today. I salute the force for realising the necessity to transform from colonial policing to community policing. In the old days, there were a few good policemen like the late Wafula who refused to sign a fake document claiming that the cause of death of the late Oryema and Ofumbi was an accident, and he was killed. I have received several reports that traffic officers are corrupt. The acts of these officers are embarassing to the nation. Recently I directed Police to deploy spies in the trucks from which they take money, intercept the corrupt officers and prosecute them. The force must be totally rid of corruption. We shall continue to deal with the issues of welfare, housing and education of Police Officers children.
