A bit about Marcus: Marcus and his twin brother Balthazar - TopicsExpress

A bit about Marcus: Marcus and his twin brother Balthazar were born in 1401. They were the youngest children of a lower class family, living in a small village in the country. They have one other sibling, a sister Marisha who is two years older than them. Their father was the village blacksmith, and Marcus and his brother were raised to take over their father’s business. Due to the families social class he and his siblings were unschooled; the only form of education the two boys received was how to become a good blacksmith. When Marcus was only ten years old he had his first encounter with his destiny; when his parents granted Bartholomew, Veronica, Edward and his wife Victoria shelter for the night. That night came the attack that killed his parents. Marcus and his siblings carry great guilt for this; as they stood by unable to do anything to stop it, as their parents were slaughtered by Cilia, Carlos and Vorgan. For the next five years he trained hard with Bartholomew, Veronica, Edward and Victoria, as they taught him to control and use his magic. At the age of fifteen, on completion of his training, Marcus along with Balthazar and Marisha co-founded the coven with Bartholomew, Edward, Veronica, and Victoria. After his death Marcus, like the others, found himself waking up in the grasslands of the world Bartholomew had created on his deathbed. Here he waited almost two hundred years until Bargo arrived, trapping Cilia and her armies alongside himself. It was then that fate dealt yet another cruel blow for Marcus; as he was attacked by Vorgan. As had the rest of the coven, Marcus had gone into this battle fully aware that one of them would not return to Bartholema; and so, despite the pain, he could only feel gratitude in the moment of the attack. Because in that moment he knew that, at least for a little while longer, his family were safe. Marcus knew from Bartholomew’s prophecy that they would be safe for the next four hundred years until the next Prime Coventian came to them; and that with the Prime Coventian, would come the end of the reign of the Vampires. And so he gratefully welcomed death, only to discover the true nature of the ill hand fate had now dealt him, when Cilia called Vorgan off, before his death was inevitable. Marcus was left in the hands of destiny which was not yet done with him, and he became that which he detested above all else; a vampire. Despite being of a later generation of vampire who should not have possessed the strength of will to fight against the creature he had become, Marcus had the bond he shared with the coven. The bond which cannot be broken by the effects of dark magic such as the vampire curse; and so he was able to remain himself despite his fate. However this only caused him more pain and sorrow, for as himself he was free to continue to detest the vampires, and subsequently himself. Having been taken by Cilia, Carlos and Vorgan as the venom took hold, Marcus found himself a prisoner in their fortress. In the beginning he had been granted free roam of the fortress; but after he attempted to escape and return to the coven, it was made clear to his captors that, vampire though he was, Marcus was still a coventian. Subsequently he spent the remainder of his four hundred years at the hands of Cilia and her sons confined to his room, for the first hundred years he was kept under constant guard. Though he had his magic and his vampire strength, speed and senses; Marcus did not make further attempts to flee his captors. He did not fear the consequences of failing to escape again, for he believed that he deserved the torture or death that Cilia and her family would bestow upon him. His only fear was success. If he were to escape and return to the coven, only to be rejected for what he had become; the pain would be unbearable. And so his fear subdued him, and he gave himself up to his imprisonment; with only a vague and deeply buried hope that one day he would have the chance to do good once more. The one and only hope he had was that when the war finally made it to the front door of Cilia’s fortress, that he would have the opportunity to aid the coven once more; and that when that was done he would offer himself up to their judgement. However as Marcus had shown no attempt in that time to escape again and had become subdued, Cilia withdrew the guard from his door. For almost four centuries he had waited neither joining nor fighting against the vampires, he became their willing prisoner. He would stand alone in his room with only his thoughts and feelings of loathing, disgust, fear and sorrow. He knew whenever any of Cilia’s soldiers had failed her, for he would hear their screams as they were beaten, tortured and eventually ripped apart and fed to their comrades. Fifteen years before the Prime Coventian was prophesised to come, he was awoken from his depressive thoughts by the sound of screaming once more. Though this time it was not the screams of Cilia’s soldiers; this was the scream of boy on the cusp of manhood. Only an hour later Marcus had found himself summoned by Cilia, and was taken to the throne room. Here he found himself presented by a boy of fifteen, unconscious and laying in a pool of his own blood. Marcus knew instantly who this boy was from his scent; this was the son of his sister and Bargo, the Coventian he has sacrificed himself to save. Keeping his wits about him and logic in the forefront of his mind, Marcus remained calm and collected. He refused, under the watchful eyes of Cilia and her sons, to give away the true nature of his reaction; and so he fought to control the insatiable rage and sorrow he felt in the presence of his barely alive nephew. For hours Brego was kept unconscious by the magic of Cilia’s witch Kas, while Marcus was first questioned and then tortured. But Marcus knew that the only way he could help Brego was to keep his silence. By the time he was returned to his room, Marcus was barely able to stand with the severity of his beating. For days he sat in his room, dragged down by the pain, sorrow, and helplessness he felt as his nephew was roughly healed; not by magic, but by the cruel hands of the prison guards, stale bread and water from the lake. Marcus knew they would only allow him to be healed well enough to survive another round of torture and questioning. Until one morning as the sun rose, when the fortress fell silent, Marcus left his room willingly for the first time in centuries, and made his way as quickly as he was able to the fortress dungeons. But he never made it far enough. Before he had managed to get close enough to so much as glimpse Brego through the bars in his cell door, Marcus was attacked and restrained by Vorgan and Carlos, and submitted to days of torture for his acts of defiance. From that day onward the guard returned to his door, always two vampires and a witch and wizard so as to be more than a match for him in Cilia’s eyes. Over his time as a prisoner of his enemies, Marcus used his magic only to create diaries, which he filled with his depressive thoughts and feelings. Then, fifteen years later, good news finally reach Marcus in his isolation; the Prime Coventian had come, and she had successfully escaped Cilia’s fortress. Within two weeks of her arrival in this world, Brego had been rescued, Cilia’s armies were on the march, and once again Marcus found himself being summoned by his captors. Only this time Cilia required his aid; and Marcus had found his chance to aid the coven. And so he agreed to open the portal back into the world from which they had all come; unleashing the vampires upon that world once more. But armed with a plan Marcus felt only hope. However, when things went wrong and Marcus and the coven arrived after Cilia and her armies, rather than before them; Guilt, disappointment and self-loathing became, once more, the only feeling left to him. The small town full of innocent people, from which Kate had come, had now been desecrated by the vampires; and was nothing more than a ghost town, where the few survivors live solitary lives in the shadows, just to survive. His guilt and anger at himself for unleashing the vampires on this world drove Marcus even harder to do all he could to protect and fight for the innocent people whom he had endangered. And when the coven arrived Marcus knew that the time had come for his judgement. When Kate did not condemn him to death along with the other vampires, Marcus truly believed that this decision was purely strategic, and so he went to war with the coven for what he believed to be the last time. When Kate fell in the battle with Cilia, Marcus felt responsible. Though all he had done had been for the good of those he had sworn to protect; Marcus could not escape the truth. He felt that his actions had not only caused the deaths of the hundreds of innocent people that the vampires had killed; but that they had led to the death of his sister, his brother’s wife. Once the initial aftermath of Kate’s death had passed, Marcus had turned to leave, with the intention of ending his existence as he had felt sure that this was the fate Kate had had in mind for him. But Balthazar had needed him, and so he had stayed; though he felt that he did not deserve the pitiful excuse for life which clung so persistently to him, he could not abandon his brother in his hour of need. He believed that he had already caused his brother the pain and grief that he now felt, and could not be responsible for more suffering. However when they returned to Bartholomew’s world and found Kate alive but unconscious, Marcus began fear her awakening. He had found his family and been welcomed back with open arms, but he still believed that Kate would not allow his continued existence. And so when the coven were choosing those who would go back to the world they had all come from to track down the remnants of Cilia’s vampires; Marcus had volunteered to lead them. Though he feared the outcome when Kate had woken up and collected him; bringing him back to Bartholema once more, he submitted to her. He was prepared to face her judgement, for she was his leader, the Prime coventian, and Marcus was prepared to follow her orders no matter what. Despite the lingering hatred for the creature he had become, Marcus felt true joy for the first time in centuries when he realised that Kate’s acceptance of him was genuine. Finally Marcus was home, and his family was not only safe, but growing.
