Today I finished drafting a 16,000 word biography of Nat Fuller, the African American caterer who was the renowned presiding genius of Charleston cuisine in the 19th century. This ex-slave staged a feast in the wake of the Union conquest of Charleston at which whites and blacks sat at his table in perfect equality subject to his hospitality. It was the most forward looking event to occur in the South during the Spring of 1865. His is a remarkable story about the will to artistry and sovereignty. The building that housed his famous restaurant, the Bachelors Retreat, still stands at 103 Church Street.
