Today, I made one of the best purchases of my life; I bought a copy of The Giver by Lois Lowry. It was on my bucket list! I have a story that goes along with this book. When I was in elementary & middle school, you had to read. You had to do book assignments and reports and read over the summer. Just one issue; I HATED it! Id rather suffer an infection to my eye from a paper cut to my retna and add salt. I DESPISED reading. I just couldnt connect with books. The books that I did connect with were either autobiographies or biographies. I couldnt read anything fiction. A teacher named Mr. Gervais was my sixth grade reading teacher. He was the one who brought many things into my life. He changed my perspective between his admiration for The Beatles, Larry Byrd and Edgar Allan Poe. He had a way of explaining things that made me look at them in a different perspective. Mr. Gervais had our class read The Giver. I was irritated at first because I despised reading. But Mr. Gervais had reassurance for kids like me. I was bored at first. I was procrastinating with the assignment but something happened. I found myself unable to put the book down and I was just in a trance reading it. The Giver, to this day, is the only fiction book that I have ever been able to connect with. The character Jonas reminded me of myself; unsure and full of anxiety. I connected more with him the more I read the book. I started reading it again right when I bought it today. I once again find myself unable to put it down. Ill probably have it finished tomorrow. Im very excited to see that they have made The Giver into a movie and Im very excited to see the cast includes Jeff Bridges AND Meryl Streep! Lois Lowry made an appearance at our elementary school when I was little. I was just a kid when she came and I wanted her autograph because she was famous, but I was even too shy to approach her. I saw her and smiled at her. She smiled back and thats the interaction I had with her. This was before I had the pleasure of reading her book. Ive heard a rumor that Lois Lowry may be making an appearance at the movie theater when it comes in. If the rumor is true, Im going to be there. I want to tell her Thank you and explain to her this story. This is something Ive wanted to do for a few years. Im so excited that I can hardly breathe!
