Today I saw an owner surrender the sweetest dog. He sat him on the intake counter, patted and kissed his head. Paid the surrender fee. Patted and kissed the dog again. The dog is happy, tail wagging. Probably thinking he was buying him a treat. Within 5 minutes the dog is being dragged (fighting to get away knowing that it is going to a scary unknown place with unknown people) flopping like a fish out of water. The employees laughing and continuing to drag the dog. This dog will now sit in a kennel, petrified, cold and scared until the shelter decides to kill him or make him available to adopt. I cried for that dog that I didnt even touch. I saw the happy dog transition to a scared traumatized dog. It is and always will be in my head and heart what this dog felt. The owner I am sure went to go have a nice lunch without a care about what he just did to this little voiceless soul Today I rescued 4 dogs. I was there for 30 minutes to pick them up and at least 8 dogs came into the shelter intake line. The one I talk about above hit me the hardest. As I sat and waited for the 4 dogs getting freedom, I had to watch this little dog say goodbye to his freedom. If only we could lock that human and others who dump their dogs without a care for 1night in a loud, cold, dark shelter kennel to teach them to have compassion for what once was a family member.
