Today I was asked at work if I wanted to wear a pink ribbon in support of Breast Cancer Awareness Month. I refused much to the surprise and shock of the individual asking me. My mother was diagnosed with breast cancer when I was a teenager. Thankfully she is a cancer survivor. She spent 5 years of her life a slave to the pharmaceutical drug Tamoxifen and went through radiation treatments. She sought out support on WebMD and gained many friends who she lost to the disease. Pink ribbons didnt save their lives. Chemotherapy didnt save their lives. Men and women running many miles for the cure didnt prevent the mass casualties. Everyone by now is aware of breast cancer. Many people are aware that the money is in the treatment and not the cure; and many arent. The exploitation of goodwill and hope has built up an avaricious and cynical industry where the trade mark image of a pink ribbon is now sold by companies who sell products that are knowingly linked to the cancer they claim to fight! And while so many wear the mindless marketing slogan fight like a girl, win like a woman they end up fighting like a fool to die like a victim! Improvements in diet and life style has more to do with the survival rate of cancer patients than any cure invented by mad scientists who think they are above nature or God!
