Today I was given a gift. I went for my two mile biking just a few mins ago. I procrastinated til I couldnt procrastinate any more. Plus its easier at night, not so hot! Anyway on the way back I stopped at seven for milk and a couple of yogurts. A homeless guy came in and asked to use the microwave for his cup o noodles. I, in turn, asked him if I could buy him anything. I didnt say what or how much or anything, just a simple question. Now, if the man had been greedy, he might have asked for the store or a few other things. I was prepared to say no to beer although something told me that wasnt on his mind. What did he ask for? A beef stick. I dont even know if those are real food but thats what he wanted. So I went to pay for it when he asked if he could please bother me for a toothbrush and toothpaste. We went to the section saw the three dollar toothbrushes and three fifty toothpaste he must have seen my expression or he thought it was too much. He then said, thats probably too much, huh? I said they usually have a kit. Mind you, to me thats highway robbery for the simple things! But back to my story. I found a three dollar kit. Toothbrush and toothpaste. Granted it wasnt huge (neither were the sample sized they were trying to pass off for three bucks!) but it was three dollars so I got him that. He walked out of the store and I paid. I gvae him his things and wished him warmth to which he said he had a couple of blankets. I do hope he is OK tonight and every night. He seemed like a bright young man. Probably fell in through the cracks somewhere and cant get back up again. My gift though was this. People, at their most dire, are still humble if thats your nature. Greedy people will be greedy regardless of situations. I need to work harder so one day I can make more of a difference than just three bucks and whatever the beef stick is. One day, maybe I could find someone like him a home and a fresh start. I only hope I have enough time. To the rest of us, its another day in paradise. DONT waste it!!
