Today I was invited to represent burns patients at RBWH by being involved in a welcoming party to revive a sizeable donation from Anton and Mike on behalf of the Gladstone Sunday Runners (look up gsr on fb) So from myself, RBWH volunteers, RBWH foundation staff, thru to representatives from OT, ICU burns, Burns acute ward and Burns professors, together we welcomed Matt, Anton and Mike, who after arriving off the plane in BNE from Gladstone, RAN over 20kms to present the giant cheque to the hospital. Then afterwards they ran into the city! Matt and Anton themselves have been burns patients themselves at RBWH. Anyway it was a great time of celebration, all together, being grateful and thankful for everyone involved, who continues to give and receive everyday, for the sake of improving the lives of those who have had the misfortune of experiencing a serous burn, thru RBWH and its Foundations effort. I am inspired and overwhelmed, by all the good that goes on unreported much of the time, because of good people who care about other and sacrifice to give back. It was good for me to meet many icu staff who were in charge and oversaw my care for 4weeks. In icu there is one door in and 2 doors out. Fortunately, because of the world class care, I came out the door that lead to the acute burns ward where I could continue my journey. They are the real unsung heros, the team in icu, them and the paramedics who give the critical care we need when we are at our worst, but never remember them. So its nice to go back and thank them, and they see us back at life,running with the second chance they have given us all as patients. After lunch myself and the RBWH foundations head lady, took Anton and Mike around the hospitals burns areas, explaining the typical journey of a big burn patient thru the facility with examples from my personal journey. Great work GSR! I am forever thankful to the RBWH burns team and its wonderful Foundation for saving my life and giving me a second chance at life.
