Today I worked on the shed and am extremely pleased with the results. It looks better on the inside than it has in years. Eleanor wants to help me, but our work styles are quite different and most of this junk is mine which means that I must decide what goes and what stays and for the latter, where it stays. Sometimes she feels unappreciated and even unwelcome at the cottage and this is entirely my fault. When I stop and consider what she has brought to this marriage, I have to conclude not much. She only raised our three daughters nearly single-handedly. Their successes, which are considerable, are due largely to her. She has sacrificed her own desires to accommodate mine at nearly every turn. She has supported me with commitment on every decision. I, on the other hand, have often been selfish. In every instance, she has responded by being unselfish. After more than 51 years of marriage we still enjoy being together and in each others company. This is due to the fact that she puts up with me. I am moody, have a bad temper (even at this age when it is all show and no go), have strong opinions which, although correct (smile), often do not coincide with hers. There are any number of reasons that she should have taken a hike. But she didnt. Other than those things, she didnt bring much to the marriage except for intelligence, humor and common sense. My mother gave her the highest compliment you can get from the Bailey side of the Koehler family, when she said,That Eleanor -- she can stay in the buggy.
