Today, JCIE organized a large-scale seminar on the future direction of US-Japan relations in honor of the late Jiro Murase, longtime president of the JCIE/USA board, who played a central role in connecting Japanese and US business, financial, and political leaders over the past half century. The events panelists—CSIS President John Hamre, Ambassador Ichiro Fujisaki, and economist Robert Feldman—called for deeper US-Japan alliance cooperation to deal with the changing dynamics of East Asia and argued that both countries have a big stake in Japan taking on a larger regional role. Later, at a memorial reception, Prime Minister Shinzo Abe spoke about how influential Murase was in bridging the two countries and how important it is to carry on his spirit in bilateral relations.
