Today Marks the 70th Anniversary of Operation Market Garden - TopicsExpress

Today Marks the 70th Anniversary of Operation Market Garden (17th–25th September 1944) was an unsuccessful Allied military operation, fought in the Netherlands and Germany in the Second World War. It was the largest airborne operation up to that time. Several bridges between Eindhoven and Nijmegen were captured at the beginning of the operation but Gen. Horrocks XXX Corps ground force advance was delayed by the demolition of a bridge over the Wilhelmina Canal, an extremely overstretched supply line at Son, and failure to capture the main road bridge over the river Waal before 20th September. At Arnhem, the British 1st Airborne Division encountered far stronger resistance than anticipated. In the ensuing battle, only a small force managed to hold one end of the Arnhem road bridge and after the ground forces failed to relieve them, they were overrun on 21st September. The rest of the division, trapped in a small pocket west of the bridge, had to be evacuated on 25th September. The Allies had failed to cross the Rhine in sufficient force and the river remained a barrier to their advance until offensives at Remagen, Oppenheim, Rees and Wesel in March 1945. The failure of Market Garden ended Allied expectations of finishing the war by Christmas 1944. One of my VERY dear friends Douglas James Wiblin Jim, was one of the lucky ones that made it back to England, only to be sent to Palestine in 1946 and was blown up in the King David Hotel bombing, Jim was buried for two days, when he was found he has sustained a broken back, massive head injuries, Jim was Deaf as a result at 27, one broken leg and a fractured arm, he was to ill to fly home so came home by boat, he was not expected to survive the journey. He contracted sunstroke and malaria on the way home. He married his childhood sweetheart in Netley Hospital, Southampton, in 1947. Jim died in 2011 aged 91 and was married to Beryl for almost 64 years! They had one daughter who sadly died 2 years ago, Beryl is still going strong aged 89.
