Today in NYC we buried a police officer, but the tragic trifles of immaturity, bigotry, and political pettiness proved to big to bury. The police who turned their back on the mayor of NYC as he solemnly took the stage to give final remarks over the loss of a fallen citizen ensured today that our greater demons and lesser angels prevail, that these unfortunate yet dark aspects of the human condition live on. These police didnt just turned their backs on Bill de Blasio though. There actions proved symbolic; they turned their backs on the citizens of NYC and of the US. But they are good at turning their backs on things. When Darren Wilson murdered Michael Brown, Wilson turned his back on the law. When Daniel Pantaleo choked Eric Garner to death, Pantaleo turned his back on the law. When juries and grand juries across the nation refused to indict state sanctioned murders--the killers of our sons and daughters, mothers and fathers, cousins and friends--these kangaroo courts, these gerrymandered juries turned their backs on justice. And when we had our hands up, screaming dont shoot, yelling I cant breathe, the blinded eyes and muted ears of justice turned their backs on us. Without justice, there can be no peace! Thus, I am insulted, utterly and unmistakably offended, by the unjust, bullying, racist, partisan, and otherwise unscrupulous acts of the police who turned their backs on the mayor, the people, the law, and justice today! What it says is that the police are above the law, above the people, and above justice; that if anyone questions the injustice of corruption that plagues law enforcement--to make our democracy stronger--she or he will be penalized, bullied, put to death, publicly scorned, or worse. These kinds of actions (acts of bullying and bigotry), this kind of blatant disregard for justice, this depreciation of democracy is not only illegal, please know and understand that it is threatening. The war machine is real, and the united police force of the US comprises its canon. Without balance, without a true and reasonable check on police authority, the police will be the most perilous affront to our freedoms--and not just Black and Brown freedoms. When they choose to, the police will terrorize us without conscious. When they get orders, they will enforce the collective disfranchisement of all people (regardless of race) without condition. And when they feel like it, they will continue to hunt and murder without consequence. Theyve turned their backs on us, so we must turn our faces toward one another and manage our freedom struggle for a more perfect union, loving society, and just world without them . . .
