Today in #Space History (March 16th): On 16 March 1926, Robert Goddard launched the worlds first successful liquid-fueled rocket in Auburn, Massachusetts. The rocket traveled for 2.5 seconds at a speed of about 60 mph (96.6kmph), reaching an altitude of 41 feet (12.5m) and landing 184 feet (56m) away. The rocket was 10 feet (3m) tall, constructed out of thin pipes, and was fueled by liquid oxygen and gasoline. From 1930 to 1941, Dr. Goddard made substantial progress in the development of progressively larger rockets, which attained altitudes of 7874 ft (2400 meters), and refined his equipment for guidance and control, his techniques of welding, and his insulation, pumps and other associated equipment. In many respects, Dr. Goddard laid the essential foundations of practical rocket technology. He is considered one of the fathers of rocketry along with Konstantin Tsiolkovsky (1857-1935) and Hermann Oberth (1894-1989).
