Today in history On Oct. 29, 1682, William Penn landed at what now is Pennsylvania. In 1863, an international convention took place in Geneva to make a permanent organization to help war victims. They decided their symbol would be a red cross on a white background - so they came to be known as the Red Cross. In 1969, the first computer-to-computer link was established on ARPANET, the precursor to the Internet. In 1982, the third song Michael Jackson and Paul McCartney recorded together, The Girl is Mine, was released. In 1991, the American spacecraft Galileo became the first space probe to visit an asteroid. In 1996, AOL stopped charging for time spent on the web - and instead switched to a flat rate monthly rate, changing the web forever. In 1998, the space shuttle Discovery blasted off with then-77 year old former astronaut John Glenn aboard. In 2008, Delta Airlines merged with Northwest, creating the worlds largest airline, and in a 3-inning game, the Philadelphia Phillies beat the Tampa Bay Rays to claim their second World Series championship.
