Today is Heroes Day in Kenya. Thats a new name for a not-so-new holiday. In this post, I explore the changing names of the holiday, the country, the nations first president... A whole lot of name-changing! As I researched the holiday, I got to thinking about the word hero. I had heroes whose influence I gladly courted and acknowledged when I was a teenager. (They werent freedom fighters and political leaders, like those being celebrated in Kenya today!) I have a record that they were my heroes, because in school we had to list three heroes--I remember we were told that we HAD to choose publicly known people, living or dead--our parents werent allowed on those lists. Looking back, I realize that those three heroes really did have a huge influence on my life. If youre interested, they were Carl Sagan, John Holt, and Isaac Asimov. Who are your heroes?
