Today is September 30th. The last day of childhood cancer - TopicsExpress

Today is September 30th. The last day of childhood cancer awareness month. However I want every month to be childhood cancer awareness month. I pray that one day childhood cancers get the same attention as Breast cancer. All cancers are awful, and in my honest opinion kids deserve more than 3.8% of Cancer research funding. April 24, 2014 Zane started radiation. He had 14 radiation treatments over seven days. This made for some very long days. Since this was Zanes first time with radiation they did the treatments under anesthesia. When Zanes not allowed to eat were not allowed to eat. Everyday before he went back for his second treatment hed start telling us everything he wanted to eat. Our day would start very early...without coffee!! This mommy without coffee is not a fun mommy. Thankfully Zane was allowed to have clear liquids after the morning treatment. We also found that giving him suckers helped. We walked around Central Park, watched movies, and usually took a nap to help the time pass. The second treatment usually finished about 2pm. By 2:30 we would be stuffing our faces. It was hard because we werent able to eat until the afternoon which made dinner late at night. Every night wed get to bed late, and wed be up early to do it all over again. Zane rocked radiation. It definitely knocked his counts down. He had a couple blood transfusions and a couple platelet transfusions. Zane had an infection in his central line that landed him in the PICU here at Phoenix Childrens. This was Zanes third infection, so Dr. B said its time for the Broviac to go. I love that we have been blessed to have doctors who will fight for Zane all the way from New York. On May 13th we had the Broviac removed, and a port placed. Zane was sad at first. He kept asking where his tubie went. He got over it really fast when he realized he could shower for as long as he wanted. His first shower after he got his port was a good 45 minutes. Oh and no more dressing changes. That was a huge relief for us and Zane.
