Today is Sweet Feature Friday! That means were getting to know one of our Sweet Romance Reads authors. Today were talking to Joanne Hill, author of Daniels Bride. I was thinking about inspiration and how there are places you go to that inspire you to do something creative. Ive had that experience a few times but one in particular I remember was when I went camping a few years back with my daughter. The campground was part of a huge regional park, but the beach was the best bit. It was just beautiful for relaxing and swimming, there were postcard-type views across to the city skyline, peacocks wandering around, acres of grassy area. It so happened that the summer that year was a rare perfect summer – warm, no rain or wind, no humidity – it was just gorgeous. So sitting on the beach in between going for swims, I got to thinking about how an average woman could meet a cliché rich gorgeous hero. Why is she here? Why is he here? How on earth do they get together once they leave this place since neither of them live there? Actually, it was probably a bit more like day-dreaming but I got to thinking…. And thinking…. That was the beginning of Daniel’s Bride, a marriage-of-convenience story, although when I finished the book I ended up changing the setting from New Zealand to Australia, and to Sydney in particular. I wanted to make Daniel from real “old money” and Australia being larger and older seemed to fit that story line better. So my lovely, Kiwi camping beach became a fictional place somewhere vaguely south of Sydney. My daughter and I tried out other campgrounds but went back to that one several more times. One memorable time it was pouring with rain, and we huddled in our little tent playing scrabble while we listened to the final of the rugby league competition (the NRL) on my old battery operated radio. Great memories, and yet, it was just a camping ground an hour down the road from home! Nowhere glamorous or exotic. So what about you? What place have you been to which truly inspired you creatively – to write a story or a poem, maybe compose gorgeous music, or even to take up a new career in light of your experience?
