Today is World Teachers Day and for the first time I can say as a - TopicsExpress

Today is World Teachers Day and for the first time I can say as a teacher I grieve. My heart hurts. A profession that was once considered noble is now being denigrated, belittled, insulted, and all the adjectives that would describe how low the profession has fallen in many eyes and minds the world over but I am feeling it here in Trinidad and Tobago. I came into teaching because I thought I had something to give, impart, share, be a part of, be responsible for and I fell in love with teaching, I fell in love with my students, new, continuing and past. I have had my fair share of ups and downs but none has brought me as low to grieving as now 15 to 17 years later. Everything that is happening in our education system from the Minister having nothing positive to say about teachers that work under him to the present situation existing in my workplace, has left me sad to say demotivated and giving serious thought to change in profession. I accepted from early oclock that teaching was and is a thankless profession but when you are constantly being bombarded by it, not even the success and triumphs and love of your students can wipe it away or overshadow it anymore. Last night I cried and even though actual tears are no longer flowing my heart hurts that this is what it has come to. So many things I want to say but cant or wont. Happy Teachers Day to all my fellow teachers and pray that God continues to grant us the strength of mind, body and soul to plod on, fight the constant belittling negativity that comes our way regardless of what we do for our charges. God Bless.
